Interview with Jaime Roca

Jaime Roca

This interview with Jaime Roca is the first in a series based on the Tim Ferris format in "Tribe of Mentors".

In the last 5 years, what new belief, behavior or habit has improved your life?
You become what you think every morning, every day.  So if you think that you are a victim,
then a victim you will be.  It works on the positive side as well. The corollary to that thought is what you
think about other people is what you get.  If you think that person is nice, then that's what you get.
If you think negatively towards them, it will affect how you feel about them and how you act toward them.
In turn, they will return what you give them.

What purchase of $100 or less has most positively impacted your life in the last 6 months or in recent memory?
Noise cancelling headphones.  I use them in the airports, any place where there is a lot of noise and I need
to focus.  What I don’t have, but want is the chili pad, which regulates the temperature in your bed.
In the last 5 years, what have you become better at saying no to?
Long pause.  I don’t know.  Pause. I have become more principled about who I am spending more time with.
(I still see people, but if they aren’t bringing as much to the table, then I spend less time with them.)
When you feel overwhelmed or unfocused, what do you do?
Thirty deep breaths with my eyes closed.  It takes about 5 minutes. This usually clear the mind.
One of the healthiest things you can do is proper breathing.  It eliminates toxins and stress.
Performance athlete, Wim Hof was able to climb Mt Everest without an oxygen tank in shorts because he
could control his body temperature using proper breathing techniques.  Vin Hoff prescribes taking a
2 minute cold shower after your normal shower and deep breathing for optimum performance.

What are the bad recommendations you hear in your profession or expertise?
The worst advice or not necessarily advice, but I hear people say is, “You need to be more self-confident.”
My reason for this is that there are inherent things that we all carry naturally.  I would never tell you to be
more confident and assertive because you already are.

What is one of the best or worthwhile investments you have ever made?
Travel.  My parents traveled with us a lot.  I remember as a kid getting off the plane and thinking
'where the hell are we?' And then later feeling like I wanted to stay.  (Jaime’s face lights up.)
I want my children to have those same experiences.
